Digital Terrain Models (also known as 'bare earth' models) are the basis of your design, route selection or planning activities. These valuable products can be generated from aerial imagery (film or digital camera) or airborne laser scanner data.
The range of parameters influences which technology is most appropriate for your requirements, e.g. the level of detail you seek, the level of accuracy, along with the location and size of your project.
Ancillary data sets such as tree canopy models or digital elevation models (DEM's) are similar data sets which can be generated using the same technologies. DEM's are the opposite of a 'bare earth' DTM. DEM's illustrate the elevation/height of the feature present, which could include the tops of all vegetation, buildings and other built structures.
